Description
The Beck Cultural Exchange Center hosts a permanent memorial to Judge William H. Hastie, the first Black governor of the U. S. Virgin Islands and the first Black federal judge in the United States. A Knoxville native, Hastie is an alumnus of Amherst College and Harvard Law School. His accomplishments paved the way for future generations of Black lawyers, judges, and elected officials. The room was dedicated on September 22, 1977.
